It was never quite real, more myth than place, functioning as New Byzantium’s El Dorado. The historical society near where it is thought to be located serves as keeper of the legend. Chrysopolis was part of New Byzantine mythology of greatness and destiny. After the war it became bittersweet, an emblem of lost grandeur.

New Byzantium was intended to be the leading planet in the six-system cluster but overreached politically and suffered the brunt of destruction in a war generations ago from which it never recovered. It has reverted to being the cluster’s breadbasket, with a patchwork of settlements and small cities producing surplus food exported throughout the cluster. Signs of destruction and governmental collapse are still evident. Central authority collapsed and local strongmen fill the gaps. The historical society clings to a grander narrative of what New Byzantium was meant to be.

THE WAR

The conflict was among the six systems, generations ago. New Byzantium became too dominant and there was a rebellion. The Thracians, the industrial engine of the six systems and a human settled group on New Byzantium, are the likely aggressors. The rebellion succeeded militarily but left the whole cluster weaker and New Byzantium permanently diminished. Nobody won cleanly.

THE THRACIANS

A human cultural group, one of the settled waves that came to New Byzantium. They are the industrial backbone of the six systems. Ronnie travels to New Byzantium on a Thracian transport, a small charged detail given their history as likely aggressors in the war.

THE GOLDEN HORN HOTEL

The Czarina’s permanent headquarters on New Byzantium. Named for Constantinople’s harbor, carrying connotations of commerce and arrival. It embodies the contradictions of New Byzantium — grand bones, threadbare present, staff and guests performing a dignity that costs them something. Anyone who is anyone comes here. Ronnie will experience the grandeur of yesteryear, the poverty and the pretense through show not tell on her arrival. The Czarina holds court here on her own terms.

SHEPHEARD’S HOTEL

Located on Hypatia, modeled after the original in Cairo where colonial power performed itself over drinks. The Czarina was a fixture there. It is where she and Ronnie first met, with the Czarina presumably sizing Ronnie up on her home ground before the current events.

HYPATIA

Ronnie’s home planet. A freeport outside the Coalition with a toxic atmosphere requiring domes. Few business laws but passionate about protecting the weak. Home of the League of Hypatian Pirates whose code permits smuggling and hijacking but not killing. Ronnie was a police detective there. Hypatia said no to Pantheran management and survived outside the Coalition on its own terms.

THE PANTHERANS AND THE COALITION

The Pantherans manage the Coalition, officially as coworkers with the Solar League (humans), the Featherote, and other undefined groups. Star calls it the Pantheran Empire, which is the accurate term the Pantherans prefer not to use. Tamara’s archaeological discovery uncovered uncomfortable truths about the Pantherans, presumably bearing on the gap between the official cooperative narrative and the reality of imperial management. The Pantherans bombed her research site and the group scattered.

THE FEATHEROTE AND FUNGUSIANS

The Featherote are birdlike people who build spaceships. The Fungusians are a networked species who design the best navigational systems, thinking in distributed connected ways. Everyone knows the Fungusians.

STAR

A living database entity and pilot who escaped termination for being too independent — the Pantherans eliminated assets that developed genuine autonomy. Star was a newby smuggler working out of Dirty World Station on the Northern Frontier when the story began. Was included in a raid, met Tamara, and became her guardian and mutual educator. Both were orphans who taught each other. Star transported Tamara to the University of the Gifted Mind on Sophacles, a frontier institution outside the Coalition. Star carries vast non-human knowledge and does not use political fictions, calling the empire what it is.

TAMARA

Archaeologist and Star’s closest companion. Mutual orphan who educated Star in human knowledge and culture. Her dig uncovered uncomfortable truths about the Pantherans. The bombing of her research site scattered the group. Whatever she discovered remains a live wire underneath events, likely still in her memory and in Star’s.

RONNIE

Former police detective on Hypatia, now an independent investigator for hire with no governmental connections. Has made her peace with operating outside conventional authority. Got mixed up with Star through a case, details to be looked up. Was displaced from Hypatia after Tamara’s discovery and the Pantheran bombing. Traveling to New Byzantium to meet the Czarina and begin sorting the mystery of Callie and the two gold coins. Wary of the Czarina’s involvement despite genuine loyalty and shared history.

THE CZARINA AND KIDD

An established couple. The Czarina is an information broker who goes where consequence gathers, now headquartered at the Golden Horn. Kidd is her other half, a minor but recurring character, currently arranging logistics including Ronnie’s transport from the asteroid belt. Both are recurring characters not written about for a while, good to have back. Once a pirate always a pirate applies to both. Loyal to the group through serious past scrapes.

RONNIE’S ARRIVAL SEQUENCE

Kidd arranges transport from the asteroid belt to the orbital platform (named in a previous conversation). Ronnie takes a shuttle to the spaceport locals call the Fig, which is Maria Notaras. She boards the Pistis ferry (named for Faith, one of the river ferries named for Greek terms for the fruits of the Spirit alongside Agape, Chara, Eirene, and Pistis). A port shuttle picks her up and stops at the Golden Horn. Each leg is a worldbuilding and local color opportunity. Ronnie experiences the contradictions of New Byzantium through this arrival.

THE ASTEROID BELT

The criminal contingent there remains hazy but its role is expected to become clear organically as the story develops.

CALLIE AND THE COINS

Callie is the coin woman who introduced the two gold coins. Ronnie is bringing this thread to the Czarina. Coins, gold, Chrysopolis, and a legendary mine are beginning to rhyme together in ways that feel organic. The shape of what the Czarina is involving Ronnie in remains deliberately unclear to Ronnie at this stage.
